Hospital supplementary insurance

With supplementary hospital insurance (inpatient supplementary health insurance), you will be upgraded to the level of a private patient for inpatient hospital stays. Depending on the tariff, you are also entitled to a single room and the treatment by the chief physician. In addition, at good rates, treatments that are higher than the doctors’ fee schedule can also be billed. This gives you more options in terms of your treatment in case of cases. You are not only dependent on the statutory health insurance benefits.

Sickness allowance

If you have secured a private daily sickness benefit, you will receive the insured daily rate per day of illness. This protection is immensely important for the self-employed and also very useful for many employees. Self-deprecation workers do not receive a six-week payday payment from the employer in the event of illness and have to take precautions themselves. However, even employees receive only about 70% of their salary from the health insurance fund in case of a prolonged illness, if the six weeks of continued payment by the employer are over. And this only in a maximum of 78 weeks.

Coverage of loss of income in the event of a prolonged illness

The loss of salary can be covered here with a daily sickness benefit from the 43rd day of illness. The amount of the insured daily rate is individually up to you. The self-employed should take care that the daily sickness benefit always has a sufficient amount and that one can really live on the payments. In addition, it may be useful for a self-employed person to cover the daily sickness benefit from the 7th or 10th day of illness. Depending on how long you can live without new income.

International travel health insurance

Foreign travel health insurance or foreign health insurance is probably the most widely used supplementary health insurance. Really everyone in Germany should have this supplementary insurance. For a few euros a year (usually between 15 euros and 20 euros) you are covered if medical expenses arise on holiday or generally abroad. Outpatient, inpatient or dental services are covered here. Search and rescue costs as well as a return transport to the home country are also covered. You can find our test winner recommendation from Stiftung Warentest for international travel health insurance by clicking on the following button:

Dental supplementary insurance

Treatments at the dentist can become very expensive very quickly. You probably already noticed if the dentures suddenly cost several thousand euros in the family or friends circle. This is exactly where dental supplement insurance helps. She not only covers the costs of dental treatment or dentures, but in many cases also pays several 100 euros per year for professional dental cleaning.

Everyone wants to keep a beautiful smile

A beautiful smile is very important to all of us. And no one wants to walk around with missing teeth later, just because you couldn’t afford an implant or something like that. With the Waizmann calculator recommended by more than 25,000 dentists, you can easily find the right dental supplement insurance for you here.

Outpatient supplementary health insurance

Outpatient supplementary health insurance usually consists of various benefit components. For example, services for naturopaths, hearing aids, glasses/contact lenses or preventive examinations in an outpatient supplementary insurance can be included.

It is important to check which benefits you really use each year and to reckon with the costs of the insurance. In many cases, such insurance can be worthwhile if you use the benefits accordingly.

Benefits often go unused

In many cases, however, the services are not used because, for example, one forgets to submit invoices. In such cases, of course, the insurance “wins”.

Hospital daily allowance

As the name suggests, with a hospital daily allowance insurance, you provide a benefit in euros per day hospital stay. If you have such a private supplementary insurance and are in hospital for five days due to surgery, for example, you would receive the insured daily rate for those five days. If this were to be 20 euros, you would receive 100 euros from your daily hospital allowance insurance in this example. This supplementary health insurance is to cover any additional costs for hospital stays. For example, the statutory additional payment for inpatient hospital stays or costs for magazines, food, etc.

Private long-term care insurance

In Germany, there is statutory compulsory care insurance, but the benefits from this are hardly sufficient. That’s why you can take out private long-term care insurance. This could be done, for example, in the form of a daily care allowance, where the insured daily rate is then paid out in case of need for care. As we get older and, logically, more and more people become care cases, this is one of the most important supplementary insurance policies. But far too few people have completed one so far.

Cancer insurance

Cancer is the number one disease of civilization in Germany. Every second person develops cancer during their lifetime. Cancer insurance pays you a pre-arranged sum when you diagnose cancer. This has the advantage that you can then take this money, for example, to be able to treat yourself in another country. There may be better cures in other countries than in Germany. However, since these are usually very expensive, the benefit from cancer insurance can help here in many cases.

Which private supplementary health insurance really makes sense?

In principle, the following private supplementary health insurances can be considered useful:

International travel health insurance

It can happen quickly that you get injured on holiday and have to go to the doctor. The cost of this can easily be several thousand euros. Everyone should therefore have health insurance abroad for a few euros a year.

Sickness allowance

A long-term illness definitely creates an income gap. Not only for the self-employed, but also for employees. This should be concluded with a daily sickness benefit. The daily sickness benefit pays to this without any time limit, whereby the statutory sickness benefit is discontinued after 78 weeks at the latest (incl. continued payment of wages by the employer).

Dental supplementary insurance

Nobody wants to walk through life disfigured and few people have a financial buffer with which you can pay a dental bill of several thousand euros. On average, the statutory health insurance fund only provides 60%. Thus, one often remains sitting on a high cost mountain. With the
right dental supplement insurance,
you can save your wallet here.

Which private supplementary insurance sains are unnecessary?

As is so often the case, the consumer ultimately decides which protection is really important to him or her. This is also the case with supplementary health insurance. However, in our opinion, there are private supplementary insurance policies that can be saved, as the potential financial risk is not really high if you do not have the insurance.

Hospital daily allowance

Presumably, it will not push anyone to the brink of financial ruin if you have to pay the 10 euro co-payment per day in the hospital yourself. Even with a two-week stay, this would be only 140€. In our view, this is in no way related to the contribution to this insurance. Instead, i’d rather take out a really good sick day allowance.

Outpatient supplementary health insurance

As already mentioned, outpatient supplementary health insurance is specifically about which benefits are actually used on a regular basis. If the contribution to supplementary insurance exceeds the benefits received every year for e.g. naturopaths, glasses, preventive examinations, etc., then such insurance makes no sense. However, there are also outpatient
supplementary health insurancepolicies,
which can really be worthwhile.

This is what you have to pay attention to when you finish

If you have decided that one or the other private supplementary insurance makes sense, there are still the following points to consider for you:

Important before graduation

  • See exactly which services can be used, how often and in what periods
  • Calendar year is not the same as “normal” year (calendar year is usually better for you as a customer, as you can claim the full benefits for this year, but e.g. only pay six contributions this year – or maybe even just one)
  • In the case of supplementary dental insurance, the benefit limits (observe the dental scale). Again, the term calendar year is better for you as a customer (you could, for example, take out supplementary dental insurance in November 2020 and then from January 2021 you are already in the next higher dental relay and have more services available)
  • also with supplementary health insurance, there are some health questions that you have to answer truthfully
