Dental Insurance in Germany

Germany offers some of the highest quality dental care in all of Europe. Many Germans buy supplemental dental insurance in Germany from a private health insurance company. In the German healthcare system, dental treatment is partly privatized. In other words, your health insurance might not always cover the entire cost of your dental treatments. This is especially true for people with public health insurance. Of course, it depends on what dental care you need and your insurance provider. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about dental insurance in Germany!

How does dental insurance in Germany work?

Most people in Germany with public health insurance buy supplemental dental insurance. If you only have public health insurance then you almost always have to pay for the majority of your dental care. For most people, the coverage that public health insurance companies in Germany offer isn’t enough. Therefore, it makes sense to buy supplemental dental insurance from a private health insurance company.

It’s important to note that you do not need to buy supplemental dental insurance if you are already insured under private health insurance. Your private health insurance plan includes dental care. If you want more coverage for dental care, then you can ask your insurance company to upgrade your private health insurance plan.

Treatment at the dentist works the same way for those with public health insurance as for any other doctor: the insured presents his chip card and the dentist treats. However, if major dental work is required then it can quickly become expensive for the insured if he/she does not have supplemental dental insurance.

An example of how dental treatment works if you don’t have supplemental dental insurance:

Let’s say you need dentures. Major dental treatments such as dentures are very expensive because public health insurance companies only pay a predetermined allowance for dental prostheses. For most public health insurance companies the predetermined allowance is 50 percent of the cost for simple, basic care – such as a bridge made of a metal alloy without gold content. You have to pay the remaining costs. If you go to the dentist for five years in a row for preventive care and you can prove this by stamping a bonus booklet, the predetermined allowance increases to 60 percent from the sixth year onwards. If you can prove that you have had stamps in your bonus booklet for ten years without breaks, the allowance increases to 65 percent from the eleventh year onwards.

An example of how dental treatment works if you have supplemental dental insurance:

Let’s stick with the same scenario as the one in the example above. You need dentures. This type of dental care is very expensive, but luckily you have supplemental dental insurance. First, you send your dental insurance company the cost proposal of the treatment plan from your dentist. Then your dental insurance company will tell you how much is covered under your plan. This amount is usually around 80% for high-quality dentures … a lot more than what public health insurance companies offer.

What’s the difference between these examples? For public health insurance, it takes almost 11 years until your plan covers 65% of the cost for your dentures. To the contrary, there’s no „bonus booklet“ you need to stamp for supplemental dental insurance. It’s easy: you get dental insurance and your dental insurance company covers up 80 percent of the costs for dentures.

Simply put, public health insurance in Germany only covers a small percentage of the cost of dental treatments. In fact, some dental treatments aren’t covered at all! In general, you can expect your public health insurance provider to cover the full cost of standard dental treatments, such as biannual dental check-ups and basic tooth fillings. More extensive dental care, such as professional dental cleanings, is almost never covered under public health insurance. For this reason, many people in Germany buy supplemental dental insurance from private health insurance companies.

Lastly, if you plan to get dental treatment then make sure you ask your dentist for a cost proposal of the treatment plan. This is called a ‚Heil-und Kostenplan‘ in German. Submit this to your insurance company before any treatment begins.

How much does dental care cost in Germany?

Dental care costs are highly variable. It depends on what type of insurance you have and the type of dental treatment you need. Supplemental dental insurance from a private health insurance companies normally offer different plans that range in prices. Of course, the more you pay, the better coverage you will receive. If you only have public health insurance then dental care outside of what is considered standard will be very expensive. Public health insurance companies usually only offer full coverage for check-ups and minor fillings. Outside of this, you are responsible for the remaining costs of all dental treatment you receive. For this reason, many people in Germany supplement their public health insurance plan with dental insurance from a private health insurance company.
