Your income determines how much you have to pay for TK health insurance. The higher your salary, the more you have to pay for public health insurance. This is the same for all public health insurance companies. You make two contributions for public health insurance in Germany.

Both contributions are a percentage based off your income. The government sets the percentage for one contribution, known as the state contribution rate. Each insurance company sets their own second contribution, known as the additional contribution rate.

TK has one of the lowest additional contribution rates.

State Contribution Rate

The state contribution rate is the same for all public health insurance companies in Germany. As of 2019, the state contribution rate is 14.6% of your income. You and your employer split this amount equally. In other words, you pay 7.3% and your employer pays 7.3%. For example, if you earn €1,000 per month, then your state contribution is €146. Therefore, you pay €73 and your employer pays €73.

One of the best perks of having TK insurance in Germany is that your dependents are included for free! For example, if you’re a family of four living in Munich, you don’t pay anymore than a family of 2 living in Berlin.

Additional Contribution Rate

The additional contribution rate is the amount of money insurance companies charge you in addition to the state healthcare contribution. Each public health insurance company sets their own additional contribution rate.

TK has one of the lowest rates. As of 2021, TK’s additional contribution rate is 1.2%. Since January 1, 2019, employers and employees split the additional contribution rate equally. As a result, if you have TK then you only pay 0.6%.
